Victory Out of Context

27 May 2006

President Bush says, just as the United States persevered and ultimately won the Cold War against communism, America will emerge victorious in the war on terror.

It’s misleading and irresponsible to imply the possibility of victory over terror. It is idealistically impossible to abolish a feeling. People will always fear and at times that fear will escalate to terror. From the time we are born we learn fear, it aids in our survival until the day we die. Our responsibility is to not let fear overshadow happiness. If we choose to be free we must accept the accompanying dangers.

Well, yes, you should always distrust those who seek to abolish fear itself, a common motivation on both sides of the conventional political spectrum. But I wonder if you also oppose rhetoric that would seem to claim victory over other emotions - hate or aggression, for instance?

Anyway, it’s a bit misleading to interpret Bush’s comment that way. The “War on Terror” is a convenient and somewhat euphemistic shorthand for the “War on Islamist Political Terrorism”, a shorthand which is by no means Bush’s invention. I agree with you on this, though: I would have us state the nature of this war and the nature of the enemy more clearly.

Nice site, BTW. Your design is clean and impressive.
